A Celebration of Respect and Honor
Kodomo no hi, or Children's Day, is a public holiday in Japan observed annually on May 5. It is the final celebration in Golden Week, a series of national holidays that begin with Showa Day on April 29. On Kodomo no hi, children are respected and honored for their happiness and well-being.
Carp Flags and Dragon Boats
One of the most iconic symbols of Kodomo no hi is the carp streamer. These colorful flags, known as koinobori, are flown outside homes and at parks to represent each child in the family. The number and colors of the flags vary depending on the age and gender of the children. Dragon boat races, called choryu, are also popular on this day.

Families often enjoy traditional treats on Kodomo no hi, such as mochi (rice cakes) and chimaki (bamboo-wrapped dumplings). Children also participate in various activities, including playing with kendo (bamboo swords) and flying kites.
