Chinese Movies, Market Busting Tours: A Double Whammy for Thai Tourism

A strategy known as "market-busting tours" is hurting the Thai tourism sector by offering unmatchably low prices to gain market share. Chinese tour operators are also using Thai nominees to monopolise visitors from China, which is alarming and harmful to the local tourism industry.

A Movie That Hurts

Besides the recent gun attack, a Chinese blockbuster released in early August has also cast a shadow on Thai tourism. The movie depicts a crime in Thailand, and has discouraged Chinese visitors from travelling to the country.

Government's Stance

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Monday denied media reports that the government will allow Chinese police to patrol tourist cities in the kingdom to protect Chinese tourists.
