Gregg Berhalter has been relieved of his duties as coach of the United States men's national soccer team, U.S. Soccer announced Tuesday.
The decision comes after a disappointing showing at the 2023 Gold Cup, where the US failed to reach the semifinals for the first time since 2019.
Assistant coach Anthony Hudson will take over as interim coach for the upcoming friendlies against Iceland and Morocco in January.
Berhalter was named coach of the US in 2018 and led the team to victory in the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He also oversaw the team's qualification for the 2022 World Cup.
However, the team's recent performances have been disappointing, and Berhalter has come under fire for his tactics and team selection.
The US Soccer Federation said in a statement that it will begin a search for a permanent replacement for Berhalter in the coming weeks.
Berhalter's departure is a significant setback for the US soccer program, which is looking to build on its success at the World Cup and qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico.
